We are going to give the C22 Rigging Seminar a try on Saturday here in Indy. We are expecting temps in the 40s, and rain (70% chance). If you reside near Indy and want to come over to Sailboats Inc ... terrific. We would enjoy the opportunity to meet you.
The Seminar is outdoors...although I am expecting we will have some shelter for you. Dress for cold weather. You might get wet.
If you reside outside the Indy area, I would probably discourage you from driving the long distance as we might have a wash-out, and I'd hate to see you spend money on gas.
If you want to come to Indy and talk Catalina 22s, we'd like to have ya.
Thanks,
Rich Fox

The 2012 Cattail Regatta and C22 Region 4 Championship.will be held on June 2&3 at Jolly Roger Sailing Club, 5961 Edgewater Drive, Toledo, Ohio.
Registration fee is $30.00. The NOR can be found on the Jolly
Roger
Sailing Club website at www.Jollyrogersailingclub.com, under
Cattail
Regatta.
We are shooting for 5 races for this regatta. Racing will be in the
Maumee Bay.
There will be plenty of dockage available at the Jolly Roger docks.
All boats will
remain in the water for the duration of the regatta.
When you arrive pull your boat into the back yard for preliminary
set up. Launching
takes place across the street. Jolly Roger has a hoist rather than
a ramp. There will
be plenty of bodies available to help you launch your boat.
I will send out an information email next week with more
particulars.
If you are planning on attending please email me to let me know so
that I can plan
dinners and events. Thank you. Also, if you know of any one else
who may be interested
in attending please pass along this email.
Let's go racing!

Downliad: Fall Series N.O.R. and Registration Form.
This year the Catalina 22s will be sailing a separate course from the PHRF, JAM and Cruising fleets. The course will be located in Maumee Bay rather than out north of Turtle Island as stated on the NOR. Travel time to the sailing area from Jolly Roger Sailing Club should be under 30 minutes. Specific course details will be spelled out at the skipper's meeting Friday evening 2030 hours. If you cannot be there in time for the skipper's meeting please let me know and I will secure race instructions for you.
I will be at Jolly Roger Sailing Club as early as 1500 hours on Friday to help with boat preparation and launching. If anyone has questions or needs help with directions please call me on my cell at 248-320-2258. Camping is available on the club grounds if you so choose. There are a couple hotels nearby, as well.
I hope to see you all there. Let's go racing!

Chuck Emrich has informed me that the 2011 Grand Annual Regatta at Cave Run is now back on this year.
For NOR, go to www.caverunsailing.org.
I have attached the updated GRIN Calendar to include the Grand Annual Regatta.
Also...Denise and I are attending the "Pig Regatta" at Brookville Lake Sailing Association (located northwest of Cincinnati in southeastern Indiana) as a possible new regatta venue for the C22 fleet. The regatta is September 10-11. Their website is www.blsa.us.
And finally, I was contacted by some folks in C22 Region 3 to discuss the possibility of having a Region 3 vs Region 4 Challenge Cup in Nashville in Fall 2012. What do you guys think...would you support this concept?
Thanks,
-Rich
All,
Good morning. I am pleased to announce that we have posted the Notice Of
Race and opened up the registration for the 2011 Old Fox Regatta, October
8-9! This year, we will be having separate fleets/starts for Catalina 22,
PHRF, JAM and multi-hull classes. There is a possibility that we might even
have a Wavelength 24 class. We also have a professional Race Officer coming
in to run the racing and keep things moving along.
Come down to Columbus, OH to enjoy the fun and festivities, which includes a party on Saturday night, with daily first -place awards, the annual Chili Cook-off, ACSA provided pot-luck dinner and a Jello-Shootout. Also back for a third year in a row, The Usual Suspects (and repeat offenders), the wonderful 9-piece band which has been entertaining the midwest sailing community all over the place, including the I-LYA Bayweek festivities.
Registration is now open and accepting orders for regatta shirts. We will post the design in the week. In addition, please indicate if you will be needing dockage and when you plan on arriving.

I look forward to seeing everyone again this year. Please don't hesitate to give me a call if you have any questions.

Due to uncertainty of local C22 fleet participation as well as expected low participation from out-of-town boats, I am going to remove the Muncie Sailing Club's Catalina Regatta (8/13-14) from this year's C22 Region 4 GRIN Racing Series.
I am expecting the MSC will still have a regatta that weekend, but do not believe it warrants inclusion on the regional C22 travel schedule at this time.
The Jolly Roger Sailing Club's Fall Series (9/17-18) and the Cave Run Sailing Association's Grand Annual Regatta (10/1-2) are a GO for this fall.
The Alum Creek Sailing Association's Ole Fox Regatta (10/8-9) is scheduled and Brent is checking to see if water levels will be maintained beyond October 1st by the State. If this regatta is cancelled due to inability to launch, there is a C22 regatta in Nashville, Tennessee (same weekend) that we have been invited to attend.
Do not wait....make your hotel reservations now to help secure a good rate and availability...especially for Cave Run.
Gary and I are also keeping an eye on possibly participating in the Captain's Quarters Regatta on the Ohio River near Louisville the weekend of September 24-25. This is a fund raiser regatta hosted by the River Cities Sailing Program. Please let me know if any of you guys are possibly interested in racing in Louisville that weekend. I am not sure what to expect, but we will check it out and keep you guys posted. Chuck, this is close to you!
Finally, with the possible changing-of-the-guard (Race Director) at Eagle Creek in 2012, I am going to see about bringing the C22 fleet back to racing in Indianapolis if the new ECSC RC is "C22 Friendly" in 2012. At the same time, I am going to check with the Indianapolis Sailing Club for a possible joint C22 and Capri 22 Regatta in 2012. ISC has an active Capri 22 one-design fleet.
Rich
Just got off phone with Gary Allen. Gary is in 6th place in Silver
Fleet.
Gary is pretty happy that they decided to stick-it-out and race in
the high wind
conditions.
The wind today was 25-30 mph with gusts. Only 5 Gold Fleet boats
raced (17
registered), and 8 Silver Fleet boats raced (14 registered).
In Gold Fleet, the 5th place boat has 15 points...the 6th place boat
has 54
points.
This is one of those situations that you go out in the heavy air
with intention
of racing.
Then if you decide not to race, then at least start and take a DNF.
Remember, a DNF is the # of boats that raced, plus 1. Whereas a DNC
is the
number of registered boats plus 1.
Taking a DNF in today's races would allow a boat to remain
competitive in the
Regatta.
The Gold Fleet is now really a 5 boat race because boats 12 boats
now have 54
points going into race #4 on Tuesday.
I will certainly bet that there is a lot of discussion this evening
about
whether or not the Catalina 22 Nationals should be raced in wind
exceed 25 mph?
What do you think??
Bruce...you would probably love these conditions?!!
Speaking of high wind....2004 National Champion Mike Glover broke
his mast while
sailing with jib-only before the 1st race.
Most boats were sailing with reefed main and jib.
Detailed results
This week (June 19-24), the 2011 Catalina 22 National Championship Regatta is being held on Lake Grapevine (Dallas), Texas. A total of 31 boats are participating and sailing in two fleets. Gary Allen (Breakin' Wind III, #15703) is the only sailor from Region 4 attending this year's event. You can follow the results and view pictures of the event using links posted on the www.catalina22.org website or go directly to http://www.catalina22nationals.com/.
Congratulations to Alex Schwinn (Skipper) and crew Christopher Chaumont and Grace Embrey who won the 2011 Catalina 22 Junior National Championship Regatta in the Catalina 22 Sport (# 15709) Polychronic. Congratulations Alex, Christopher and Grace. The C22 Junior National Regatta was first held in 2007 in Region 4 at North Cape Yacht Club (Lake Erie).
In 2013, we have the opportunity to bring the Catalina 22 National Championship Regatta to the Great Lakes Region (Region 4). If you or your sailing club are interested in organizing and hosting the event, or want to find out more information about it, please contact me (rich_fox@yahoo.com or 317-815-8599).
Some of the basic requirements include:
Most fleets or clubs that have hosted this event have generated a nice profit (several grand) used to support their own racing or junior programs.
I have recently helped organize the 2007 and 2010 C22 National Regattas and will be available to help a Region 4 fleet or sailing club organize the event. It is a very rewarding experience, but does require work to do it right.
Our next C22 Region4 event is the 2011 Great Lakes Cruise to Door County, Wisconsin (Green Bay). For details, please visit the Fleet 130 website at http://fleet130.org/2011glc/index.html.
If you or some of your sailing friends are looking for a new or used Catalina 22, check out the inventory at Sailboats Inc ( www.sailboatsindiana.com ). They currently have the following C22s in stock:

Congratulations to Bruce Sondys, skipper of the Catalina 22 "Scurvy Dog" and his crew - daughter Becky and Kay Hamel, on winning the 2011 Region 4 Championship Regatta this past weekend at Alum Creek Sailing Association near Columbus, Ohio and their May Cup Regatta. A total of 7 Catalina 22s participated in the event with a total of 10, yes 10 races on Saturday and Sunday. The Scurvy Dog and her skipper and crew won with seven bullets, two second place finishes, and a third place finish. The racing was very close all weekend. Many thanks to Brent O'Keeffe and the ACSA for hosting the Catalina 22 and doing a great job of running the regatta.
Bruce Sondys (Skipper of the Scurvy Dog) will be sniffing around the Jolly Roger Sailing Club to determine if the JRSC Cattail Regatta for 2012 may become a two-day event (first week of June) to provide Catalina 22 sailors an additional racing venue for 2012 and beyond.
Although missing in action this past weekend, I will be serving as your C22 Regional Commodore for at least another year. - Rich Fox
Attached is the GRIN Score Sheet. Bruce Sondys takes the lead, followed by Chuck Emrich, Mike Bracket, Brent O'Keeffe, Gary Allen, Kevin Loving and Bruce Faris all earning points this past weekend by participating in the C22 Region 4 Championship Regatta.
The best 3 of 5 races will count towards the GRIN...so it is not too late to come out an participate. I have a feeling that Bruce and Becky were grinning all the way home from this weekend's regatta.
If you or your business have something new that you can donate as a Door Prize for this year's Catalina 22 National Championship Regatta, please contact me. I would like to send a care package of Door Prizes from members of Region 4. Products that are related to the Catalina 22 is always nice. And something like a gas card would also be greatly appreciated.
If you make a donation of a prize, and it does not have to be something expensive, I will make sure the Regatta organizers are aware so they may provide proper recognition.
Please contact me if you may be able to assist - rich_fox@yahoo.com. Thank you.
I am looking for a Club to host the C22 Region 4 Championship Regatta. If you and your Club are interested, please contact me. It is also most acceptable to have the Championship Regatta as part of a Club's Regatta - it does not need to be a stand-alone event. If you or your club may have a tentative interest, please let me know by end of October 2011.
Thank you,

GRIN rule "Best 4" regattas" has been changed to "Best 3 regattas". As we have 5 scheduled regattas, counting 3 is a much more reasonable number. It is also consistent with the Region 3 GRITS program that also has 5 Regattas and counts only the Best 3 results.
We have 7 boats registered for the Region 4 Championship Regatta - 5 in Gold Fleet, 2 in Silver Fleet. If you have not pre-registered, please do so at www.alumcreeksailing.com and go to the Racing / Information page to complete your registration on-line.
Also, come prepared to our Region 4 meeting to discuss your suggestions for venues and dates of Region 4 races. If you cannot attend, but wish to share with me your suggestions before next week, please reply back to me via e-mail.
Thanks,
-Rich
OK folks – time to start thinking about getting the boat in the water and enjoying another year on the Great Lakes.
The Great Lakes Cruise will be July
31-August 6th in Door County WI.
Registration form is at www.fleet130.org
Be sure to call the Sister Bay Marina and
reserve your slips. Steve will only be
able to hold them for us until early June.
At this time, only 3 boat have made their
reservations, Thanks Geoff and Kurt.
If you know of any other C22 owners who might be interested
in sailing with us,
please pass the information on to them.
One of the good things about sailing Door
County and Sister Bay is you don’t
have to live on the boat if you don’t want to. You can rent
a nice house or
condo in town and day sail with the group but sleep in a
comfortable bed. Sister
Bay is very tourist friendly!
I am working on the itinerary now. Should
have it posted to the Fleet 130 web
page in the near future. If you have any ideas for
activities, let me know. We
will definitely have some great sailing. Depending on the
winds, we might even
sail thru Porte des Mortes, or Deaths Door. This is the
relatively narrow
passage between Green Bay and Lake Michigan, at the tip of
Door County. And we
will definitely have some nice sunsets and an evening sail.
We might do a fun
‘race’ around Horseshoe island near Nicolet Bay. Nice beach
for swimming.
I know the price of fuel is giving everyone pause. Trust me,
you deserve a break
in early August. And by then the price will be down
somewhat. Maybe only
$3.50/gallon!
Get those boats ready, shine the bottoms
and get them in the water. Then check
your trailer and get it ready. July 31 will be here before
you know it.
If you plan to sail with us, please let me know so I can
start planning the
picnics and parties.

Our Region 4 Championship Regatta is next weekend (May
14-15) at Alum Creek
Sailing Association (near Columbus, Ohio).
We have 7 boats pre-registered.
I received one nomination for Region 4 Commodore - me.
I will gladly continue to serve as your Region 4 Commodore.
The reason for seeking nominees was to make sure a fair
opportunity was provided
to any C22 Region 4 sailor(s).
Agenda - Region 4 Meeting - May 14 @ Alum Creek Sailing
Association (some time
around 7 to 8 p.m.)
Note: you do not have to race at the Regional Championship
Regatta to come to
our Regional Meeting.

There is a nice ramp at the marina ($7) and secure parking in town for the tow vehicles and trailers. After we coordinate with the marina, we will post the information on slip reservation.
Itinerary (Tentative
July 31: arrive and rig/launch boats. Group picnic at the Marina
August 1: Sail to Nicolet Bay – swim on the beach.
August 2: Sail around Chambers Island
August 3: Sail north to Ellison Bay, Porte des Morts and into Lake Michigan
August 4: Sail to Fish Creek or Egg Harbor
August 5: Race around Horseshoe Island
If the weather/wind is good, we may try to sail across Green Bay to Menominee Michigan. That will likely be two day sail as the distance is approx. 25 miles ONE WAY.
In addition we will have a Christmas in August Gift exchange, moonlight sail, Boat project Show and Tell and another group picnic or two.
On Friday evening we will have a group dinner at a local restaurant.
The evening sunsets from Sister Bay park or the break wall at the marina are wonderful. Plan to relax and enjoy your sundowners at sundown!
If you have any questions, drop me a note at gunsmoke9150@comcast.net
Hope you are staying warm. Snowing again here. Hope it doesn’t accumulate much!

For lunch, we all met a Bubba Gumps at Navy Pier. For dinner, we enjoyed the Weber Grill. Outdoor temperature was in the upper 20s. Indoor temperature was 70.
There were lots of vendors - but no new toys that caught my eye. Many vendors sold out of "stuff" by Saturday morning - they were amazed at how many people were buying, and not just looking.
There was a good mix of small boats and big boats. Catalina Yachts has always been good to have a C22Sport or Capri 22 on display in recent years. In the photo, we are standing in front of the new Catalina 355 and Capri 22.
I had the opportunity to talk with Frank Butler, Sharon Day, and Ron Frisosky of Catalina Yachts. You might be interested to know:
1. The C22 MkII is now discontinued.Rich Fox
2. The C22 Sport is now being built at a consistent weight of 2270 (plus/minus 10 pounds) and every Sport is weighed before leaving the factory. Weight certificates available upon request.
Attached is the C22 Region 4 Newsletter (2011 Winter Edition).
The next Newsletter (Spring Edition) will be distributed the end of May and
include results of the Region 4 Championship Regatta at Alum Creek.
I am also attaching information on the Catalina 22 Northern Gulf Coast Cruise (NGCC)
Itinerary and
Registration Form.
If you enjoy cruising aboard your C22, and think you would also enjoy spending a
week in Florida sailing your C22, this is a GREAT event to attend.
Every year approximately 15 to 25 Catalina 22 owners from across the United States participate in this Cruise.
I participated in the NGCC in 2002 and 2006 and experienced a terrific time sailing approximately 150 miles along the Florida Panhandle Intercoastal Waterway with at least 20 other Catalina 22 sailboats.

The Catalina 22 MainBrace (January 2011 edition) Magazine is now
available for

I have found it easier to access the MainBrace on the web, then
immediately save
and read it as a PDF file.
Looks like we will have 10-12 people participating in our inaugural C22 Winter
Rendezvous at Strictly Sail Chicago.
Those who recently confirmed their participation will receive future updates
beginning some time later this week...thank you.
If you are looking for an opportunity to get a "jump start" on this year's
racing season, the Chattanooga Challenge (hosted by Privateer Yacht Club,
Chattanooga, TN) is scheduled for the weekend of April 16-17. This may be a good
"tune-up" for the Region 4 Championship Regatta in May.
This event is on the Region 3 GRITS Racing Circuit, so expect a good turnout. I
might suggest making hotel reservations for Hixson, TN early.
My wife Denise and I have added this to our "must attend" list for 2011 (pending
good weather).
Keep an eye for future updates of the C22 Great Lakes Cruise to Door County.
The C22 Region 4 Calendar is still in development.
Announcement is attached. Some dates and venues are still being finalized.

For those of you who belong to a Club listed on the GRIN Circuit, please let me know your firm dates, as soon as they are available.
Jolly Roger may be able to host the C22 fleet in Maumee Bay instead of having to motor 1.5 hours into Lake Erie. If that's the case, turnout for the 2011 Fall Series should be good, compared to the past year or two.
It has been quiet at the St. Mary's Boat Club. I have included SMBC on the calendar, but am not sure if they will be able to host the Catalina 22s in 2011.
Initially C22NSA membership war going to be required, but it was felt it is more important for our inaugural year to encourage folks to come out and race. We didn't want somebody to come out and race and then be DSQed because they weren't C22NSA members.
I was encouraged at the good turnout at the Ole Fox Regatta. Hopefully, we can get more local boats at the various Clubs in the Region to participate.
Included is an award for "New Racer of the Year" and "Best Crew".
